Cliche horror

Other writers, do you have this fear? I sit brainstorming and come up with an idea that seems good. I mull it over a bit, turn it this way and that: yes, that’s pretty good, that would work. Then the fear starts to build: oh, god, this plot point is totally a cliche. 900 hack writers have done this before me, and 900 more will do it tomorrow. I must think of something EVEN WEIRDER, so different and off-beat that no-one will have ever thought of it or come even close to it.

So then I have to go back to sitting and brainstorming and the next idea comes along and, well, the same thing happens. It’s very hard to stick with any idea when this horror of the overdone, of the cliche, is always lurking there …
