Just add books

This article at Publishers Weekly highlights a cool book-sales initiative: hooking up with farmers’ markets, which are very hot right now. Powell’s, which is a great bookstore in Portland, has jumped onboard with the idea and brings about 150 books to the market every week. They’re mostly going with cookbooks and gardening books, which makes sense, but judging by a lot of the farmers’ markets I’ve been to – which often incorporate artsy products, like ceramics or hand-made jewellery – they could probably get away with bringing books that aren’t quite so on-point in terms of topic. (Or go with a ‘local authors’ theme to go with the local food. Locavore reading, if you will.)

I like to see stories about the ever-expanding ways people are selling books; it’s promising, at the very least.
