Question answered

So previously I posed the question of what was up with the numbers in the Dewey decimal system that have lost their meaning or never gained one. My personal librarian has answered this request: “804 still lives, but is unassigned – waiting for a new area of knowledge? 789 is available as ‘composers and traditions of music’  but as an optional number with subdivisions; preferred use is 780-788. A sample class here is: 789.261015242 for spanish folk music for springtime! Ditto for 819 – available as ‘american literatures in english not requiring local emphasis’ but prefer 810-818 for all american literatures.”

Hmmm. It is not as romantic as I had thought, dreaming of authors and books fallen so far out of favour that we no longer devote a category to them.
